Don’t let your bike depreciate over the summer
You may be tempted with what appears a generous offer for the value of your motorcycle on SOR terms. Fair enough. If it sells at all, and you don’t get a call from their sales team later putting you on the spot with a lower offer. But seller beware: we bought a few bikes last autumn/ winter at much depreciated values after their owners had seen them lose value over months in someone elses showroom. The owners could have had a better price from us earlier in the season, and enjoyed the proceeds a lot sooner.
Sales or return arrangements are a great tool for a cash strapped dealer. No risk for those bikes that don’t sell, and fill up the showroom at no cost. Easy to tempt the unwary seller by offering unbelievably generous prices: we have recently seen some used (SOR) bikes offered for sale in Scottish showrooms for up to £1500 over book retail value! Even disregarding the asking price they do not sell well out of a showroom: a salesman will always push buyers towards “owned” bikes that can be turned in to cash rather than an SOR bike that has a small margin in it. They are probably desparate for the the cash as it is – why else not offer to buy your bike outright in the first place?
